Carl Hiaasen famously gave Eragon to his son to read on a family trip, and his son loved the book. So Carl Hiaasen suggested to his editor at Random House that she read Eragon by Chris Paolini (to that point, a self-published novel). Subsequently, Random House offered Chris Paolini a 500000 dollar advance for his trilogy, the first book of which was Eragon.
